Challenge #4- Make it a quicky!

Quicky shower that is! You bet people. Water may not be too expensive but if we make a habit of taking a shorter shower, it'll save us in the end. I am guessing most of you have already showered today because you are an hour ahead of me and a little more on top of it than I am so I will give you Friday and Saturday to complete the challenge. In fact, I will give you points for each if you do it BOTH days. Here's the deal.

No shower=0 points- we don't want any stinky people :)
1 min. shower= 5 pts
2 min shower= 4 pts
3 min shower= 3 pts
4 min shower= 2 pts
5-7 min shower= 1 pt
8 min or more shower= 0 pts

How quick can you lather? Good luck!

Spices, Check, and I've Got Proof!

So here's my proof. I wrote them all down and then taped the list onto the inside of my cupboard.

Challenge #3- Ease up on the TP

First off, good job everyone! I think we are saving money already. The day before the spice challenge I bought a little lemon pepper at the store only to come home and find out I already had a full one. That is a good 5 bucks I spent needlessly!
Also, one clarification, in the beginning I believe I said would do it per family, however, since not all husbands are participating I will do it by person. So if your husband is participating make sure he/you comment on his success so I can document. Thanks.

That's right folks I said TP, as in toilet paper!
...you'll be surprised that you TRULY can make your toilet paper roll go much farther than it is now. Your challenge for today is an easy way to score 1 POINT:Every time you visit the porcelain throne today, use about 3 less squares of tp than you usually do.Sounds ridiculous, I know, but if you started this habit, let's see:This is math regarding the Ladies. Men-folk, I have no idea what you do in there, but do your best to cut back.
Each Kirkland Brand roll of toilet paper has 425 sheets.
If you are currently using 7 sheets per pit stop, that allows for 60.714 pit stops. If you are pit stopping 6 times a day, that roll will last you, and only you, 10.12 days.
HOWEVER...
If you use 3 less squares per visit, here are your NEW calculations:
425 sheets divided by 4 pieces of TP = 106.25 pit stops. If you're still going 6 times per day, that 1 roll will last you, and only you, 17.71 days.Using 3 squares less per stop will allow your roll to last about 1 WEEK LONGER!Now that's some money you're not flushing down the pipes! Not only am I encouraging the world to save $, but I'm doing math as well. Ahhh...spoken like a true accountant's wife.
Now, I don't want any dirtied fingers so don't reduce to that point. Also, if you have kids old enough, and you dare, teach them a little about wasting less with this challenge.

Challenge #2- Let's Spice Things Up

Good Job yesterday! And for those of you that weren't able to drink only tap water yesterday...good luck today. Don't forget to make a comment on the specific task when you have completed it so I can give you your points.

Now, for your next challenge...

It's 4:00pm. You need to feed your crew-or yourself. You are quickly making a grocery list and notice the recipe calls for a few different spices.
Do you have those spices?
You don't know & you have NO time to search through your chaotic cupboard.
So what comes? You buy more spices at the store only to later discover you already have 2 jars of dried basil. Nuts!
Could there possibly be a solution? Complete this task & you'll have the answer.
CHALLENGE #2: Today let's organize your spices & extracts by making a list of what you have. Doing this will help you AVOID buying unnecessary items.....and it will make your life a pinch easier. If you already have a spicy log, your challenge today is to make a log of your soups. I find that I have multiple cans of soup, & yes it's nice to have them on hand, but it'd be nice to know what's there.
If you complete your log of either spices/extracts OR soups, you will earn your lucky self
3 POINTS today!!!

Challenge Numero Uno- THE TAP!

Hi my name is Lindsey and I used to be a water brat. I'd want it bottled, purified, the works. I'm a new woman now. I've stopped nursing the bottled water and I now......brace yourself......
go tap.
I fill up my awesome El Camino Hospital water bottle, or if that's dirty I grab the ol' green guy in the morning and I'm good to go for the day, with several refills from the tap of course.

I figured out how much I've been saving by cutting back my bottled water habit. Have a gander:
-35 bottles/case
-with CA redemption tax the case would = out to roughly $6.00
-If I went through about a case a week
-52 x $6 = $312 I'm now saving per year
In fact, it's more than that b/c I was very genereous with my bottled water & would share often. And this is just the bottled water part of it, not to mention all other drinks we buy.
SO......
Your challenge for Feb 3rd is not to give up bottled water altogether, but just try it for a day. Drink from the tap folks, drink from the tap. While we are at it let us all save ourselves from the expensive habit of all the other drinks we buy...you know the Coke, DP, dare I say Crystal Light??? Get rid of all of it for the day. Tap water ONLY.
This challenge will earn you 5 points should you be successful. And if you already steer clear of the plastic punch, then you have easy points coming your way.

Can you do it?? You have today and tomorrow to complete this task. (I'll try to post earlier in the future or maybe even the night before.)

Make sure to leave a comment telling me you completed this challenge with honors.

Fish Family Frugality Challenge

Alrighty-tighty folks,

This is the site of the Frugality Challenge. Before we start a few rules:

On single day challenges you have 2 days after it is posted to complete the task. So if I post on Monday you can do the challenge on Monday or Tuesday only. Obviously, week and month long challenges have to be done within their respective time frames.

We will never ask for #'s. We could possibly ask for percentages (we saved X%, not X amount).

With each task I will give you the amount of points you can earn. Leave a comment on the specific task, recording your success. I will keep track of all points (maybe on the side bar...we'll see).

Any questions? Pretty straight forward.

We will start this week off with a BANG. You will be competing in 5 challenges, 1 each day so you'll have to stay on top of it and check back daily, if possible, but like I said, you have 2 days to complete the task.

Hopefully these little challenges will become daily habits, or at least make us think.

Good luck!

Kearl Family Pictures

Just thought I'd let you guys take a look at our family pictures if anyone is interested. Haley took them for us. Just so you all know after this year she is no longer doing family pictures, so get them done if you want them. Here are a few of ours. The rest are on smugmug.

Things are going well here. Finally settling back into routine since the long vacation. Ava can't stop talking about Disneyland so I hope you are all planning on it! Does anyone have a date set? Ty is going to be coming over the 2nd weekend (26th-30th-ish). I am planning to stay longer but at least over that weekend, obviously. Ty has given me permission to stay as long as I want (as long as it is not intruding) and we are getting a season pass to D-LAND! Can't wait.
The other exciting news is that we decided that we can't handle the "stress" (as Tyler calls it) of waiting to find out what the baby is when it is born so we find out a week from Tuesday (the 5th I think). So we will keep you all informed on whether you need to send all the cute girl clothes you've all just used our way. My guess is start packing them. Also, we were thinking about having the baby in Utah, but to be honest, I don't know what I was thinking! That just sounds like total STRESS to me. So Christmas in the Bay Area is what we'll be doing. So if anyone wants to visit before then, let me know. :)
Someone make sure mom posts when she gets back from France and Spain. Sounds like they are having a blast. They are on Ty stomping ground right now, he is incredibly jealous. They went to the ward he served in and even met someone who still knew him!
Hope all is well, let's get this blog going again!
